“DOUBT” – an analysis of its success

The track “Doubt” has just surpassed 500 million streams on Spotify. How did a song that was never released as a single end up among the seven most popular tracks by the band? Today, we’re going to take a closer look at that.

“Doubt” is part of the massive commercial success that was the album Blurryface, and just a few years ago it didn’t stand out in any way compared to the other tracks on the project. In fact, as recently as 2020, the song had fewer streams than “Fairly Local,” “The Judge,” or “Polarize,” placing it only 9th out of 14 tracks on the album. So what happened that caused a track which wasn’t particularly popular to now overtake half of the Blurryface singles and aim for a Top 5 position in the band’s all-time rankings?

The first viral TikTok videos featuring the track appeared as early as 2022, and the first major streaming spike came as a result of the livestream celebrating the 10th anniversary of Vessel in January 2023, where Tyler showed us what the demo version of the song sounded like.

I know that this is not Vessel related, but I’m gonna pull up “Doubt,” from the next record after that. Because, as I was going through demos, I found what I think should have been the way we did “Doubt,” but we didn’t.

This version became increasingly popular on the platform in the following months, leading to the original version of “Doubt” seeing a twofold increase in monthly Spotify streams in February and March 2024 (at that point, the track had already accumulated 260 million streams).

Such increase in popularity for an old, nearly 10-year-old track could not go unnoticed by the band, which Tyler confirmed himself during last year’s concert in Łódź.

So, a couple days ago, my mom called me and she said, ‘Hey, did you know you have a song blowing up on TikTok?’ I said, ‘Really, which one?’ And she said, ‘Well, not only is it a ten-year-old song, but it is actually the demo version of that song as well.’ So I called Josh and I said, ‘You know, I still have that demo version just chilling on a hard drive at home.’ So, sometime later tonight, we’d like to announce here that, here in Poland, that we are gonna officially release the demo version of “Doubt” tonight.

And they did it. The band responded to TikTok trends for the first time by officially releasing “Doubt (demo)” and performing it live the very same day.

At the time of writing, the demo version has nearly 70 million streams on Spotify and over 2 million TikTok videos. Combined, both versions have accumulated over 10 million videos, which is an absolute record for the band – surpassing even hits like “Stressed Out” and “Heathens.” The most popular video alone reached 20 million views.

The release of the new version resulted in over 30 million new streams in April alone, including 22 million for the original version. The hype naturally declined in the following months, but since the concert in Poland, “Doubt” has consistently been gaining at least 10 million streams per month. If this trend continues in the coming years, it could reach the band’s Top 5 most-streamed songs of all time.

It’s also worth mentioning “Hometown,” which has experienced a similar story, though on a smaller scale. The track, which a few years ago was the second least-streamed song on Blurryface, is now among the Top 15 most-streamed tracks daily by the band, surpassing hits like “Shy Away,” “Jumpsuit,” and “Lane Boy.” It is also currently in the Top 20 most-streamed songs of all time for the band, and everything suggests it will easily break into the Top 15, showing just how powerful TikTok has become. The most popular video featuring the song has over 40 million views – a clear illustration of its reach.

Interestingly, the track gained its second life around the same time as “Doubt,” peaking in popularity last May. The band did not directly respond to this surge, but it was noticed by the famous Dutch DJ Tiësto, who released an instrumental track sampling “Hometown” in June – “Everlight.”

How far will TikTok trends take the track “Drag Path”? In the coming years, will listeners once again rediscover another forgotten song by the band? We hope the TikTok community will continue to bring the band’s music back into the spotlight.
